A suspect in the Golders Green incident was apprehended by authorities with the assistance of a vigilant patrol officer from the Jewish community safety organization Shomrim.

Yonathan Elkouby, a volunteer, collaborated with two Metropolitan police officers to subdue the alleged attacker after two individuals were stabbed outside a synagogue. Recalling the encounter, Elkouby described how he, along with the police, managed to restrain the assailant, who had made direct eye contact and lunged towards him.

Shomrim, also known as “watchers” or “guards” in Hebrew, conduct routine patrols in certain areas of north and east London. Despite having no official authority and relying solely on private funding as a registered charity, they are readily available to assist all community members in times of need.

Established in 2008 following a surge in criminal activities, the Shomrim NW London branch now conducts safety patrols six nights a week, except during Shabbat and High Holidays. The organization, comprising dedicated male and female volunteers, aids in the apprehension and prosecution of numerous offenders annually.

Ben Grossnass, a Shomrim officer, has responded to several serious incidents recently, emphasizing the growing necessity for Shomrim’s services in combating hate crimes and ensuring public safety. Calling for increased government support, Grossnass stressed the importance of community solidarity in addressing societal challenges.

Expressing concerns for his children’s safety in the current climate, Grossnass highlighted the vital role of governmental assistance in enhancing security measures. Shomrim’s efforts in response to the recent terrorist attack underscore the critical need for continued community support and vigilance.

Shomrim’s proactive approach involves extensive training for volunteers, who are equipped with essential skills in counter-terrorism, first aid, and crime prevention. Through collaborative efforts with law enforcement, Shomrim volunteers contribute to crime prevention and swift responses to emergencies, safeguarding all residents regardless of background.

The organization’s commitment to protecting the community is evident in its swift response to incidents and dedication to supporting victims of hate crimes. By fostering a safe environment and maintaining close collaboration with local authorities, Shomrim plays a crucial role in promoting public safety and security.
