Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new Joybuy platform in the United Kingdom to compete with major players like Amazon. The company, valued at £30 billion, offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and more, featuring popular brands like Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy is providing next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and various other cities such as Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, catering to a population of 17 million. Additionally, the platform offers a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed by 11am, promising delivery by 11pm. JD.com has set up its own logistics network with distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.
The decision to launch Joybuy in the UK follows JD.com’s withdrawal from negotiations to acquire major retail brands in the country over the past couple of years. The company considered purchasing Currys in 2024 and engaged in talks for a potential takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September, which eventually fell through.
Executives express confidence in JD.com’s long-term presence in the UK, citing the appeal of their product range, competitive pricing, and convenience to attract new clientele. Matthew Nobbs, the managing director of Joybuy UK, emphasizes the firm’s commitment to providing an excellent customer experience, asserting their dedication to continuous improvement.
In addition to the UK launch, JD.com is expanding its operations to Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The company sealed a significant 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) deal to acquire Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy last year.
