Police in Italy are investigating the death of a student who passed away after elective surgery to address a rare condition causing abdominal bloating. Francesca Tucci, 24, underwent the procedure to treat Wilkie’s syndrome, a gastrointestinal disorder where part of the small intestine gets compressed between arteries.
The surgery took place at Antonio Cardarelli Hospital in Naples under Italy’s intramoenia system. Unfortunately, Francesca’s health deteriorated rapidly after the operation, leading to emergency surgery and her subsequent passing. The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Naples has initiated a manslaughter inquiry based on a complaint from the family.
Surgeon Felice Pirozzi and other medical professionals are under investigation during the prosecutor’s inquiries. Francesca’s family expressed concerns over the handling of her case, stating that despite significant expenses incurred for the surgery and hospital stay, they witnessed a tragic outcome.
Francesca was a law student at Parthenope University and described as a vibrant and dedicated individual by the university. Her family highlighted the lack of timely and adequate assistance during her critical moments. They alleged a distressing gap in communication and support during the ordeal.
