Replicas of the football jersey donned by Paul Gascoigne and his England teammates during the Italia ’90 tournament are currently the top-selling vintage football shirts, surpassing the World Cup. The iconic plain white design with dark navy accents and the Three Lions emblem became famous when Gazza famously shed tears of frustration after receiving a booking in a semifinal match against West Germany.

Gazza’s emotional moment resonated with the nation over three decades ago, despite England’s subsequent elimination from the tournament in a penalty shootout. Retail giant Sports Direct announced that the 1990 design has become their best-selling retro football shirt, in collaboration with heritage shirt manufacturer Score Draw.

In honor of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, Sports Direct is launching a campaign called ‘When Football Was Football,’ hosted by comedian Steve Bracknall, the creator of fictional football club Royal Oak FC. Experts in retail note a significant increase in demand for retro England and Scotland football shirts, featuring classic designs from past international competitions, with the retro market doubling in size since the 2022 World Cup.

Among the top sellers are England’s Euro ’96 shirt worn by figures like Gareth Southgate, Scotland’s 1996 shirt worn by players such as Gary McAllister and Colin Hendry, and the 2004 England shirt worn by David Beckham and his team. Steve Bracknall expressed his enthusiasm for the campaign, highlighting the unifying power of football during major events like the World Cup.

A spokesperson from Sports Direct described ‘When Football Was Football’ as a tribute to the traditions, personalities, and jerseys that have captured fans’ hearts and aimed to connect nostalgia with a new generation. Recent reports revealed that England players have purchased up to 1,000 tickets for family and friends for each World Cup game, showcasing their excitement for the upcoming tournament.

Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs Council Lead for football, disclosed these figures while discussing policing strategies for the event. For those seeking quick access to valued news, consider selecting Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News.
