A bear with the ability to open windows and operate faucets is currently at large in Japan following its aggression towards four individuals. The highly intelligent animal is roaming around Fukushima, Japan, where authorities and hunters are actively searching for it after causing havoc in an office building and a factory.
Caught on surveillance footage on Wednesday, the bear was seen pursuing and attacking a worker in a company parking lot before being scared off by a passing motorist. Subsequently, the bear sought refuge in an office building, where it assaulted another person before escaping once more.
The bear then proceeded to harm two additional individuals before entering an electronics facility. Witnesses observed the clever bear using its paws to turn on a tap and quench its thirst. Despite efforts to contain it using tranquilizer guns and traps, the resourceful creature managed to evade capture by unlocking a window and fleeing. Evidence of scratch marks near the window lock was found.
During an emergency briefing on Thursday, Fukushima officials disclosed that the bear had been shot with a tranquilizer dart, but the sedative inexplicably had no effect on the animal. Yuki Baba, the city mayor, emphasized the bear’s exceptional intelligence, noting its capability to manipulate a locked window and access water independently.
A joint operation involving government officials, law enforcement, hunters, and drones has been launched to locate the bear, which remains at large as of Friday. Mayor Baba stressed the challenges posed by the bear’s agitated state, necessitating cautious monitoring while ensuring public safety.
Following safety measures, local schools were briefly closed on Thursday but have since resumed classes, with teachers taking extra precautions by securing ground-level windows and doors. Statistics reveal that bear-related fatalities in Japan have reached 13 in the year leading up to March, with a record high of 238 serious attacks. Changes in habitat, climate, and human population distribution are believed to contribute to the escalating human-bear encounters.
In response to the surge in bear incidents, Japan recently amended its firearm regulations to allow for emergency gun use in residential areas. However, in this specific case, firearms were not utilized due to the presence of flammable materials at the suspected bear hideout.
