Donald Campbell’s iconic Bluebird, meticulously restored by the Bluebird Project volunteers, made a poignant return to Coniston Water after nearly six decades since the tragic crash that claimed Campbell’s life. The renowned speed pioneer, who had achieved eight world speed records on both land and water during the 1950s and 60s, met his untimely demise while attempting to surpass 300mph on January 4, 1967, resulting in the hydroplane flipping and sinking.
In a remarkable effort, the Bluebird Project reconstructed the hydroplane in Tyneside, which later recommenced operations in 2018 at Loch Fad on the Isle of Bute. The Bluebird K7 The Festival has been launched to commemorate its comeback to Coniston Water, featuring daily displays of the Bluebird, subject to favorable weather conditions. Spectators gathered eagerly along the shorelines to witness the historic moment.
The course, starting from the Boating Centre on Lake Road and concluding across from the Priestley Centre, will not attempt to replicate Campbell’s record-breaking speeds on the lake, with the craft maintaining a cautious speed of around 150mph. Australian pilot Dave Warby, a prominent figure in world water speed records and son of the late Ken Warby MBE, will helm the Bluebird during its runs.
Reflecting on the emotional return, Bluebird support crew member Anthony Robinson recounted the tragic events of 1967 when he, along with others, raced to the scene of the accident. The retrieval of Campbell’s possessions and eventual recovery of the wreck in 2001 shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Notably, an inquest held in 2002 concluded Campbell’s death as accidental, attributing factors like rough waters and excessive speed as contributing elements to the tragedy.
The legacy of Donald Campbell, who pushed the boundaries of speed and courage, continues to captivate admirers worldwide. His daughter, Gina Campbell, fondly remembers his unwavering determination and indomitable spirit that propelled him to achieve the seemingly impossible. The revamped Bluebird K7 stands as a testament to Campbell’s audacious pursuits and enduring legacy in the realm of speed records.
