Andrea Horwath, the Mayor of Hamilton, has revealed in a recent public letter that she was involved in an abusive relationship. She expressed her exhaustion from staying silent and emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety, setting boundaries, and speaking the truth for all survivors in Hamilton.
In her letter shared on Wednesday, she disclosed, “I am sharing this because I am tired of being silent. I want every survivor in Hamilton to know there should be no shame in choosing safety, in setting boundaries, or in telling the truth when you are ready.”
Horwath mentioned facing criminal harassment charges and a no-contact order, leading her to maintain distance from her former partner, a common action taken by many survivors.
Sharing her experience was not easy for her, as she described it as painful and frightening, acknowledging the burden of carrying such a secret for an extended period.
Despite attempts to reach out to Horwath’s ex-partner through legal representation, no response was received from him prior to the publication deadline, as reported by CBC Hamilton.
Letter Released Following City Committee Decision
Horwath’s decision to run for re-election in October was announced last Friday. Her letter coincided with a property standards committee ruling concerning a property owned by Horwath, where her ex-partner currently resides in Hamilton.
The property on West Street North required substantial repairs, including the roof, basement flooring, and foundation walls, with a deadline set for May 1 of this year.
The committee recently declared its lack of jurisdiction to consider a late appeal by Horwath regarding the repair order issued on January 9, according to municipal officials.
Horwath’s appeal sought an extension until November 2028 to complete the required work, as detailed by city reports.
In her letter, Horwath expressed her disappointment with the committee’s ruling but affirmed her commitment to addressing the property issues and moving past this distressing chapter in her life.
Recognizing her obligations as the legal property owner, she reiterated her dedication to fulfilling them.
The scrutiny surrounding the property matter has brought certain aspects of Horwath’s life into the public eye over the duration of its consideration at the committee level.

In an interview, a McMaster University expert specializing in intimate partner violence (IPV) commended Horwath’s bravery in sharing her personal encounter.
Melissa Kimber, a social worker and associate professor at McMaster University, emphasized the courage and generosity displayed by Horwath in sharing her story, expressing her support and belief in the mayor.
Kimber highlighted the challenges faced by survivors in coming forward, fearing disbelief, blame, or stigmatization, especially for public figures like Horwath. She emphasized that IPV encompasses various forms of abuse, including emotional, physical, and financial control.
