A member of the Alberta Prosperity Project, known for advocating separation from Canada, has stepped down following the use of a racial slur during an event where a draft constitution for an independent Alberta was unveiled. The event, organized by the “Stay Free Alberta” citizen initiative petition, featured the Black Hat Gang from Medicine Hat, who played a role in developing the constitution.
Ian Parkinson, a member of the Black Hat Gang, co-wrote the draft constitution titled “Foundation of Freedom,” which was presented in Airdrie and livestreamed. Parkinson’s derogatory comment targeted individuals belonging to Sikh, Muslim, or Arab communities. In response, Mitch Sylvestre, the leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, accepted Parkinson’s resignation and emphasized that such remarks are not endorsed by the group.
The draft constitution, criticized as “nonsensical” by some separatist leaders, proposes unique government structures, including an oversight branch and elected judges in a sovereign Alberta. Despite the backlash, Sylvestre clarified that the presented document is open to discussion and not a final version. The lack of consensus among separatist groups highlights ongoing divisions within the movement as the Alberta referendum approaches on Oct. 19.
Prominent figures like Keith Wilson and Bruce Pardy have distanced themselves from the proposed constitution, citing concerns about its content and readiness. The controversy surrounding Parkinson’s remarks underscores the challenges of maintaining unity and credibility within the separatist movement.
