Tragedy struck a grandmother in Derby who used to show her appreciation for the NHS by banging pans, as she passed away shortly after receiving her Covid-19 booster vaccine.

Mohinder Kaur Mahal, aged 85, faced difficulties speaking a week after receiving the vaccine along with a flu shot in Derby. She was subsequently hospitalized due to her condition. Twelve days post-vaccination, Mrs. Mahal, a widow, suffered a fatal stroke at Royal Derby Hospital on October 31, 2022, as revealed in an inquest held on June 22.

Following her death, concerns were raised by her family regarding a potential connection between the Covid vaccine and the stroke. Baldev Mahal, Mrs. Mahal’s son and primary caregiver, expressed his doubts during the inquiry at Leicester Coroner’s Court, stating, “When I look back now, I’m convinced, in my own opinion, there’s some kind of a trigger. Something’s jolted my mum’s system to send her down that road. I respectfully say to anyone, it’s not trying to put a downer on the vaccine… it’s what happened in my mum’s circumstances.”

The inquest disclosed that Mrs. Mahal had been fearful of contracting Covid and had initially declined the vaccine multiple times before eventually agreeing to it. Mr. Mahal mentioned that they were not informed during the vaccination appointment that she would be receiving a booster jab and were not provided with any informational leaflets regarding the Covid or flu vaccines.

Mr. Mahal emphasized the lack of informed consent in his mother’s case, stressing the importance of tailored explanations considering her health conditions and academic level. He highlighted the adverse symptoms his mother experienced post-vaccination, including blurred vision, pain, and confusion.

Despite the family’s concerns, Dr. James Scott, a stroke consultant at Royal Derby Hospital, dismissed the notion that the vaccination contributed to Mrs. Mahal’s stroke. He cited her pre-existing health conditions, such as heart failure and a prior stroke, as critical factors.

During the inquiry, it was revealed that Mrs. Mahal had diabetes and had previously suffered a stroke in January 2021. The proceedings were relocated to Leicester from Derby after Baldev Mahal alleged bias from the previous coroner, a claim that has been refuted. The investigation remains ongoing.
