A young girl’s quick actions prevented a wildfire from spreading at a cricket club in Stockport. The incident occurred on July 18 when the girl, a junior cricket player, noticed the blaze and alerted her mother, Rebecca Evans, who was working as the bar manager at Stockport Cricket Club.

The fire engulfed bushes and trees near the cricket ground, leading to a temporary halt in the game as spectators were moved to safety. Club officials mentioned that this was not the first time the club had been targeted by fires and acts of vandalism.

Evans immediately called emergency services upon seeing the fire intensify. She described the situation as alarming, with her daughter feeling scared. As they awaited the arrival of the fire brigade, children were moved to a secure area inside the clubhouse.

The incident took place amid a period of extreme summer temperatures, contributing to dry conditions that increase the risk of wildfires. The cricket club has faced various challenges in recent years, including damage to property, fires, trespassing, and racist graffiti incidents.

Reports to the Greater Manchester Police have highlighted instances of antisocial behavior, including fires started with fireworks and cannabis. The club treasurer, Herman Schurink, noted a rise in vandalism cases, with substantial costs incurred for repairs. Schurink emphasized the importance of volunteer efforts in mitigating these expenses.

Stockport Cricket Club has been vocal about the ongoing issues with a neighboring park area, expressing concerns about repeated damages and safety risks caused by unruly behavior. The club highlighted the need for enhanced security measures, such as installing secure fencing, to deter future incidents.

Efforts to address the recurring challenges faced by the club underscore the broader issue of safeguarding public spaces and preventing potential harm. The Mirror has reached out to Stockport Council for further insights on the matter.
