“Generation Z Warned: Coastal Dangers Ignored”

Days before four British teenagers tragically lost their lives in water incidents, experts had cautioned that Generation Z tends to underestimate the risks associated with coastal areas.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) highlighted the dangers of open water last week amid a scorching heatwave prediction. Despite the safety reminders, multiple accidents claimed the lives of several young individuals across the UK recently, including the discovery of 15-year-old Declan Sawyer’s body at Swanholme Lakes near Lincoln.

As the warm weather persists into the half term, the RNLI, the leading lifeguard organization in the UK, continues to stress the importance of adhering to crucial safety guidelines when heading to the coast. According to the RNLI, young men face the highest risk of drowning, and preventive measures were offered to avert such tragedies.

Celebrity Hunted star Jordan Wylie MBE, in a recent RNLI campaign video, emphasized the vulnerability of young men to drowning incidents and demonstrated essential techniques for surviving water emergencies.

Over the long weekend, five teenagers from the UK and Ireland lost their lives due to water-related incidents. Among the tragic incidents, a 13-year-old boy drowned in Leadbeater Dam near Halifax, while another unnamed teenager went missing in water at a country park in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Additionally, an unnamed girl passed away at Kingsbury Water Park in Warwickshire, and in Ireland, 15-year-old Abbie Carmody-Pepper lost her life at Burrow Beach in Sutton, Dublin.

The RNLI’s latest campaign, named “float to live,” coincides with the expected influx of people to coastal areas due to the hot weather. Despite the allure of natural water bodies, the organization warns of the unpredictability of such environments, cautioning individuals about potential risks like strong currents and rip tides.

In a bid to raise awareness, Jordan Wylie MBE shared life-saving steps for handling water emergencies, emphasizing the importance of the “float to live” technique.

Statistics revealed by the organization indicate that in 2024, 193 individuals died in accidental drowning incidents, with the majority being men aged between 20 to 29.

The Bridlington RNLI volunteer Water Safety Officer, Bob Taylor, urged beachgoers to remember the “float to live” advice, especially during the upcoming busy months near open water and coastlines.

Amid the ongoing heatwave, the RNLI issued a caution against cold water shock, a potentially dangerous situation when exposed to water temperatures below 15C. This phenomenon can lead to loss of control over breathing and movement, escalating the risk of heart attacks. The organization stressed that practicing the float to live technique could be life-saving in such scenarios.
