Hundreds of additional police officers are set to patrol the beaches in Northern France to deter small boat crossings following the finalization of a new agreement. Drones and helicopters, amounting to millions of pounds, will be utilized for surveillance to prevent smugglers from loading risky vessels with migrants. The deal also involves a 40% increase in officers dedicated to halting small boat crossings in France, with the UK issuing a warning that funding will cease if no progress is made.

Under this agreement, payments will be contingent on reducing the number of individuals reaching the UK. Currently, there are 750 personnel, including police, intelligence, and military officers, stationed along the French coastline. This number is set to escalate to 1,100 as part of the agreement, which was reached after weeks of impasse, driven by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s efforts to enhance an initial deal conceived by the Tories.

The agreement entails an investment of £500 million to enhance enforcement actions, with an additional £160 million earmarked if the measures prove effective. Advocates caution that solely focusing on policing the Channel may not suffice, emphasizing that expanding safe pathways is crucial for combating smuggling networks.

Addressing the accord, Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of restoring order and control to the borders, emphasizing the need to crack down on perilous crossings and bring human traffickers to justice. The partnership with France has already thwarted tens of thousands of crossings, with the UK deporting or returning nearly 60,000 individuals found to have no legal right to remain.

As part of the new measures, a specialized riot police unit will be established to handle unruly crowds on beaches, while a French intelligence unit is slated to almost double in size from 18 to 30 officers. Additionally, efforts will be intensified to target taxi boats that pick up individuals in shallow waters after launching from distant coastal areas, with French authorities assigning an extra 20 maritime officers and a new vessel for intercepting these boats.

Since the beginning of the year, at least six fatalities have been reported in attempted Channel crossings, with over 6,000 individuals successfully reaching the UK since January 1. Home Office data reveals that since July 2024, around 42,000 individuals attempting to cross the Channel have been intercepted, with 480 suspected traffickers arrested last year.

Notably, the previous agreement, established during Rishi Sunak’s tenure as PM in 2023, saw the UK committing £476 million over three years to impede small boat crossings. A temporary £16 million arrangement was agreed upon earlier this year while finalizing the latest terms.

Shabana Mahmood expressed the significance of the UK-France collaboration in preventing illegal migrants from embarking on journeys to Britain, stressing the necessity for further action to halt unauthorized crossings and prosecute human smugglers. The agreement will be front-loaded, with the influx of officers scheduled for the summer when small boat crossings typically peak.

Meanwhile, the Home Secretary is advancing various measures aimed at deterring migrants from entering the UK, including implementing 30-month reviews of refugee status that could result in repatriation if deemed safe. The government is also exploring the option of providing incentives to unsuccessful asylum seekers, including families with children, to voluntarily leave the UK.

Critics argue that focusing solely on policing the Channel fails to address the root causes that drive individuals to embark on perilous journeys. With safe and legal pathways diminishing, individuals fleeing persecution and conflict in countries like Afghanistan and Sudan are compelled to resort to hazardous small boat crossings. This approach, they contend, could expose vulnerable individuals to unnecessary risks and jeopardize their safety.
