Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year suspension from professional tennis for declining a doping test in December. Vondrousova, a former world No.6, expressed frustration on Instagram last year when a doping control officer arrived at her residence for an out-of-competition test, considering it an invasion of privacy.
In a recent statement, the Olympic silver medallist disclosed feeling overwhelmed and frightened by an unannounced visit late at night without proper identification. She clarified that her actions were not an attempt to evade testing but stemmed from concerns for her safety, supported by medical diagnoses of Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) officially charged Vondrousova for test refusal, leading to the imposition of a four-year ban due to her lack of compelling justification. ITIA emphasized the necessity of maintaining fair competition through rigorous anti-doping measures, noting that refusal to test carries the same consequences as testing positive.
ITIA’s chief executive, Karen Moorhouse, highlighted the importance of upholding a robust testing system to safeguard clean sports. The independent tribunal ruling underscored the significance of unpredictable testing to deter doping, emphasizing that players are subject to testing anytime and anywhere, with refusal posing significant risks.
During the tribunal proceedings, Vondrousova cited stress, mental health issues, and safety concerns as influencing factors in her decision. Testimony from the doping control officer further informed the tribunal’s decision, which ultimately found no persuasive grounds to justify Vondrousova’s test refusal.
