A Glasgow woman initially mistook her night sweats and sleep disruptions for a common cold but was shocked to learn she had blood cancer. Ann Wraith, a mother of one, sought medical advice after feeling unwell, leading to a diagnosis of myeloma, a cancer originating from abnormal plasma cells.

Expressing her disbelief, Ann shared, “I sensed something was off, prompting me to request blood tests from my GP. The cancer diagnosis came swiftly, just two weeks later.” The news left her feeling frightened and isolated, especially as her daughter couldn’t visit her due to hospital restrictions.

Managing myeloma, a treatable but incurable condition, has posed significant challenges for Ann as she adjusts to life as a parent, spouse, and friend. The varied symptoms of blood cancer, including persistent pain, fatigue, infections, and bone issues, can complicate its identification.

Recalling her symptoms, Ann described struggling with what she thought was a severe cold, frequent nighttime awakenings, extreme fatigue, and unexplained leg pain. Following her diagnosis, she underwent a stem cell transplant, enduring a taxing recovery period marked by physical and emotional side effects.

Reflecting on her journey, Ann emphasized the importance of acknowledging the mental toll of living with myeloma, urging others not to ignore unusual symptoms. She highlighted the supportive role played by the Beatson Cancer Charity throughout her treatment, making the experience more bearable and fostering a sense of community.

Grateful for the charity’s assistance, Ann now cherishes everyday activities and treasures moments with loved ones. She emphasized the value of even the smallest victories in her recovery journey. A spokesperson from the Beatson Cancer Charity stressed the significance of raising awareness about myeloma and its symptoms to facilitate early diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes.
