Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling over £400,000 from the party to support his extravagant lifestyle.
Murrell, who is estranged from Nicola Sturgeon, confessed to using SNP funds for luxury purchases, including a high-end motorhome, expensive watches, pens, and a silver wine coaster. He also doctored financial records and forged invoices in an attempt to hide his illicit activities.
Following his guilty plea, Murrell was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh. The judge, Lord Young, noted that Murrell’s sentence would have been longer if he had not admitted his crimes. Nicola Sturgeon expressed her shock and disappointment over her former husband’s actions, stating that she had no knowledge of his misuse of party funds. The couple, once a prominent duo in UK politics, had separated before Murrell’s legal troubles emerged.
