Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling over £400,000 from the party to support his extravagant lifestyle.

Murrell, who is estranged from Nicola Sturgeon, confessed to using SNP funds for luxury purchases, including a high-end motorhome, expensive watches, pens, and a silver wine coaster. He also doctored financial records and forged invoices in an attempt to hide his illicit activities.

Following his guilty plea, Murrell was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh. The judge, Lord Young, noted that Murrell’s sentence would have been longer if he had not admitted his crimes. Lord Young emphasized that the punishment aimed to deter other senior officials in large organizations from abusing their power.

Court records revealed that Murrell fabricated invoices to buy pricey items, such as a luxury car and a robotic lawnmower, using SNP funds. He also made smaller purchases like hand cream, staples, and a toilet seat, disguising them in the party’s financial system.

Murrell’s lawyer stated that he had the means to repay the stolen amount in full and had been living in seclusion since his admission of guilt. The scandal unfolded when Murrell was arrested in connection with a police probe into the SNP’s finances.

Nicola Sturgeon expressed her shock and disappointment over her former husband’s actions, stating that she had no knowledge of his misuse of party funds. The couple, once a prominent duo in UK politics, had separated before Murrell’s legal troubles emerged.

The revelation of Murrell’s embezzlement has caused upheaval within the SNP, with party leader John Swinney issuing a public apology to members for the breach of trust by their former chief executive. Swinney described the betrayal as deeply troubling and acknowledged the anger felt by SNP supporters.

The scandal involving Murrell has had far-reaching implications for the SNP, tarnishing the reputation of a party that once held significant influence in Scottish politics.
