Labour’s lack of readiness for governance leading up to the 2024 general election has been acknowledged by a former top aide of Keir Starmer. Morgan McSweeney, the ex-chief-of-staff to the Prime Minister, admitted that the party should have displayed more optimism during its initial months in power. He attributed early missteps, stemming from inadequate planning, such as the controversial decision to reduce winter fuel payments for pensioners, as having a detrimental impact on the government’s image.
McSweeney’s remarks follow Starmer’s recent resignation announcement as Prime Minister, with his departure set for July 20, just two years after Labour’s substantial electoral triumph. Speaking on the BBC’s Political Thinking podcast, McSweeney highlighted the failure to anticipate the evolving political landscape and adequately prepare for the challenges ahead. He emphasized the need for prompt action and a clear strategy to demonstrate tangible changes to the public.
The former aide recalled his realization, prior to the 2024 election, that the government had not sufficiently readied itself for governance, resulting in early vulnerabilities being exposed. Following the assumption of office, Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ decision to eliminate winter fuel payments for most pensioners to address financial deficits left by the previous administration was met with criticism. Starmer’s subsequent somber announcement regarding the impending difficulties of the first Budget further compounded the government’s challenges.
Acknowledging the unexpectedly severe obstacles faced, McSweeney admitted to a lack of optimism at the government’s outset. He recognized the mistaken judgment in cutting winter fuel payments, a move that was later partially reversed due to its negative repercussions. Reflecting on the internal dynamics, McSweeney noted the oversight in curbing excessive spending and conceded that the decision-making process lacked a comprehensive plan.
Moreover, McSweeney revealed an anecdote from a conversation between Starmer and former US President Donald Trump, where Trump humorously commented on foxes becoming overweight from consuming birds killed by wind turbines. Although the exchange was met with amusement by onlookers, it highlighted the unique challenges faced by the Prime Minister in his interactions with international counterparts.
In his first post-resignation interview following the controversy surrounding Peter Mandelson’s diplomatic appointment, McSweeney expressed his desire to move on to a new phase in his life. He emphasized the need to close this chapter and redefine his public persona after his visibility increased during his tenure, leading him to seek a more public profile to assert his identity and signal a transition from his past role within the party.
