A Food Basics store will be taking the place of a Metro grocery store in the South Keys area of Ottawa this autumn, resulting in the loss of jobs for many employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store was made in order to better cater to the needs of customers in the region. The change was attributed to local market conditions and customer demands rather than rent costs, according to Metro.
The announcement came as a surprise to employees at the Southgate Metro location. Justin Braganza, a meat cutter with over 30 years of tenure at the store, mentioned that they were informed of the closure back in May due to financial pressures. Despite the collective agreement stating that the workers cannot transfer to other Metro stores, those interested can apply for positions at the new Food Basics store.
The collective agreement for the new Food Basics store stipulates that a minimum of 10 part-time and five full-time employees from the Southgate Metro can apply for and be hired at the new location, with their seniority taken into account regarding pay. However, the news has left employees like Braganza disheartened, as his specific role may not be available at the new store.
While the union representing the workers declined an interview, they negotiated enhanced options for the affected employees, including job opportunities at the new Food Basics store and improved severance benefits. Legal experts highlighted the possibility of unions challenging such decisions due to potential work shortages and anti-union practices, which could lead to prolonged legal battles.
Braganza expressed his disappointment over the situation, emphasizing the impact on the close-knit relationships among colleagues and customers that will be disrupted by the store closure. The uncertainty surrounding the future job prospects of the affected employees has left them feeling powerless in the face of the company’s decision.
