One of the initial British individuals to test the upcoming driverless robotaxis set to arrive in Britain soon shared his astonishing experience, stating that he felt more secure being chauffeured by a robot compared to a human driver.

Alex Mitchell, aged 33, opted to take a trip in the advanced Waymo vehicle during a visit to the United States to catch some World Cup games last month. Spending time in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the select cities where the AI cars are operational, there is speculation that they may soon debut in London.

Waymo, a division of the tech behemoth Google, asserts that its technology significantly reduces traffic accidents and even prevents injuries to pedestrians and cyclists. Despite some skepticism from advocates, the company had to suspend its self-driving car service in five regions recently due to a software glitch that caused vehicles to become stuck in flooded areas.

Although Alex harbors concerns about London’s bustling streets being unsuitable for autonomous cars, he was so impressed after his initial experience that he opted for three more driverless rides while in the U.S.

Describing his encounters, he noted the distinctive appearance of the vehicles with what seemed like fans on top, making them easily recognizable. To book a ride, users need to adjust specific settings on the Uber app, and upon arrival, they can unlock the doors by tapping a button on the app.

After boarding, an AI voice greets passengers, instructing them to fasten their seatbelts and enjoy the journey. Users can select their preferred music, and an interesting aspect is that tipping is disabled since there is no human driver to tip.

Initially, Alex found the experience both mind-boggling and slightly nerve-wracking, particularly observing the vehicle negotiate turns with the steering wheel moving autonomously, creating a surreal sensation. However, he quickly realized the vehicle’s cameras meticulously detect pedestrians and cyclists in real-time, ensuring a safe and well-programmed ride.

Expressing a sense of enhanced security compared to traditional human-driven trips, Alex remarked that he felt safer entrusting his journey to AI. He highlighted the absence of distractions that human drivers often face, emphasizing the programmed safety measures and preserved safe distances provided by autonomous vehicles.

Despite the novelty of witnessing empty driver seats in operation, Alex acknowledged the need for societal adaptation to this new technology. He affirmed his willingness to utilize autonomous vehicles again if he were to return to the U.S.

As the taxi-hailing app in London gauges customer interest in driverless minicabs, UK-based Wayve seeks regulatory approval to introduce these vehicles in the country. However, Alex pointed out potential challenges in adapting the technology to London’s crowded streets, emphasizing differences in pedestrian behavior between regions.

Reflecting on the broader implications of autonomous driving, Alex acknowledged that widespread adoption of self-driving cars still faces significant hurdles. Nonetheless, his overall experience was positive, and he expressed curiosity about the future developments in this field.
