A raging artist is taking legal action against FIFA for £18 million following the destruction of a famous mural in the host city for England’s first World Cup match. The massive artwork, titled “Ocean Life,” had been a beloved feature of Dallas since 1999. Despite its popularity, city officials ordered its removal before England’s game against Croatia in the World Cup opener. The artist, Robert Wyland, has initiated a lawsuit in Texas seeking compensation from FIFA. He expressed disappointment that fans will miss the opportunity to admire his impactful creation.

Wyland has sued both FIFA and the building owners where the mural was located, arguing that Dallas and the artist deserved better treatment. The destruction of the mural was deemed a personal tragedy for Wyland and the local community. The North Texas FIFA World Cup Organising Committee announced plans to replace the mural with a new artwork to enhance excitement for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

In response to the lawsuit, FIFA distanced itself from the matter, stating that it was under the jurisdiction of the host city committee. The mural, known as “Ocean Life” or Whaling Wall 82, was part of a series created by Wyland in 1999 to raise awareness about ocean pollution. The legal team representing Wyland emphasized that the destruction of the artwork violated federal laws protecting artists’ works from being destroyed without consent, which Wyland did not provide.

Wyland expressed deep disappointment over the loss of his artwork, highlighting the importance of valuing public art and artists within communities. The mural’s removal sparked outrage among Dallas residents and notable figures like singer Kacey Musgraves. An online petition has garnered over 2,600 signatures, urging FIFA to finance a new mural site in downtown Dallas. With England scheduled to play in the city on June 17, a significant turnout of 20,000 Three Lions fans is anticipated for the match.
