The FIA revealed in a recent statement that adjustments to regulations are set to come into force during the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons. The key modification involves changing the balance between combustion and electric power within the engine, transitioning from the current 53/47 split to a new ratio of 60/40 within two years.
According to the FIA statement, discussions among the FIA, FOM, Teams, and Power Unit Manufacturers have led to an agreement on modifications to the Formula 1 Technical, Sporting, and Financial Regulations for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. These adjustments aim to address concerns related to energy management under the updated Power Unit framework, enhancing Qualifying competitiveness while maintaining the thrilling racing brought about by the current regulations.
The proposed changes will gradually realign the contributions of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System throughout the 2027 and 2028 seasons. They include specific adjustments to internal combustion engine performance, fuel energy distribution, energy recovery system utilization, and increased flexibility in energy management strategies.
Initially planned for full implementation before the 2027 season, the alterations faced opposition from some power unit manufacturers, leading to a compromise agreement. As a result, the changes will be phased in gradually rather than all at once.
The new regulations are expected to reduce reliance on batteries significantly, aiming to address issues such as derating on long straights. This move comes in response to widespread complaints from drivers during the current season regarding the 50/50 electric-to-combustion engine setup. Notably, Max Verstappen has been vocal about his discontent with the regulations, even hinting at retirement if the situation does not improve.
The recent announcement indicates progress in addressing the challenges faced by drivers, with Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leading the drivers’ championship. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton follows in second place, while George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, currently holds the third spot as they head into the upcoming event in Barcelona.
