A female scientist’s skeletal remains were discovered in a forest almost a year after she went missing, revealing disturbing new details.

Melissa Casias, a 53-year-old administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, vanished in June 2025 after an unexpected return home from work. Her disappearance prompted intense searches and pleas from her family for more police effort.

On May 28 of this year, a hiker found a decomposed body with a gunshot wound in the McGaffy Ridge area of Carson National Forest, along with a handgun nearby. The body was later identified as that of Melissa Casias.

New Mexico State Police confirmed the identity of the body but stated that the cause and manner of death are still undetermined. Further examination by medical investigators is planned.

Concerns have arisen about a possible murder, as Melissa’s daughter, Sierra, claimed her mother did not own a gun. Detectives are investigating the origin of the firearm using serial numbers, ballistics, and forensic evidence.

Thomas McNally, a former FBI detective, revealed that Melissa’s decomposed body was found near a tree with an abandoned gun close by, showing no signs of animal interference despite the forest’s wildlife.

Melissa’s family updated on Facebook, expressing shock that her remains were found in an area previously searched and pledging to seek justice.

Sierra recalled in a TV interview that her mother returned home briefly before disappearing and that her last interaction with her was ordinary, though she seemed quieter than usual.

After Melissa failed to return home, her belongings were found untouched, and her electronic devices had been wiped clean. Extensive search efforts yielded no results until the recent discovery by a hiker.
