A powerful earthquake in Peru on Saturday night has resulted in multiple fatalities, triggering a significant emergency response. The earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, occurred at a depth of 13.67 miles around 9.24 pm local time, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
Local media indicated that numerous houses collapsed in the most severely impacted area of Pumpunya, leading to a swift response from rescue teams. The epicenter of the quake was approximately seven kilometers south of Chupaca, with tremors felt across several towns in the Mantaro Valley, including Huancayo, Concepción, and Jauja.
The death toll has climbed from two to five individuals, with authorities cautioning that the number could rise further, according to Peru21. Various emergency services, including police, firefighters, medical teams, and local authorities, have been mobilized to assist affected individuals and retrieve victims from the affected region.
