Gary Southgate has turned his dream into reality with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours in southwest Saskatchewan. The scenic train rides through the Frenchman River Valley showcase Southgate’s passion for preserving the region’s history and beauty.
Southgate, a farmer from North Battleford, has been collecting and restoring old trains since 2013. His vision goes beyond mere ownership; he aims to bring these historic trains back to life and share the stories of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets.”
His fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by in Biggar to North Battleford. Starting with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, Southgate later shifted his focus to acquiring CN equipment to recreate the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains.
Having amassed a significant number of rail cars over the years, Southgate’s dedication to preserving these pieces of history is evident. Some of his cars have even appeared in the Polar Express films, and he acquired the Cape Tormentime rail car once used by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Despite facing challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate has successfully launched Eastend Scenic Rail Tours with the help of Great Western Railway staff. The tours have garnered positive feedback and support from locals and visitors alike.
Looking ahead, Southgate envisions expanding his operations to include an RV park, a museum, and a maintenance facility at the railyard. His ultimate goal is to ensure that his passion for trains and preserving history leaves a lasting legacy for Eastend, Saskatchewan, and all of Canada.
Southgate’s determination and optimism shine through as he continues to work towards making his vision a reality, hoping that others will carry on his legacy long after he is gone.
