FIFA encountered the embarrassing scene of numerous unoccupied seats at the second match of the World Cup due to fans attributing it to exorbitant ticket prices. President Gianni Infantino witnessed South Korea’s 2-1 win against Czechia at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico, where TV cameras captured extensive empty seating areas, broadcasted globally.

The announced attendance of 44,985 fell just 679 seats short of the 45,664 capacity, despite vacancies across the stadium, not limited to premium sections. Criticism was directed at FIFA for its ticket pricing strategy, deemed to inflate prices artificially and mislead fans. England supporter Garford Beck expressed little surprise at the sight of empty seats, highlighting the disproportion between ticket costs and fans’ affordability.

Concerns were raised over the trend of empty seats in matches involving smaller nations due to unattainable prices, echoing sentiments shared by fuming fans on social media. Football Supporters Europe (FSE) flagged a fivefold increase in ticket prices compared to the previous World Cup, creating barriers for local and international fans to attend. Resale platforms were inundated with listings as fans attempted to sell tickets amid soaring travel and accommodation expenses.

The ticket pricing controversy unfolded against a backdrop of violence during the tournament’s opening match, with protesters engaging in clashes with authorities outside Estadio Azteca. President Infantino defended FIFA’s pricing model, citing unprecedented demand exceeding expectations. However, criticisms persisted, with accusations of FIFA pricing out regular fans and complaints filed with regulatory bodies over ticketing practices.

High-priced VIP sections at the South Korea game and unsold seats at other matches underscored the impact of inflated ticket costs. FIFA’s adoption of variable pricing drew backlash, with ticket prices escalating significantly leading up to the tournament. The final match tickets reached exorbitant prices on the resale market, further fueling discontent among fans priced out of attending.

FIFA’s stance emphasized aligning with U.S. market practices and channeling profits back into the sport. Despite the defense, the ticket pricing controversy raised fundamental questions about accessibility and affordability for fans across the globe.
