The family of a British woman who was fatally stabbed at her residence in France believes they have identified the perpetrator of the crime. Karen Carter, aged 65, was assaulted near her house in the village of Trémolat last April, but the person responsible for her death remains unidentified. One year later, her relatives indicate they harbor suspicions towards a specific individual but have opted to allow the investigation to proceed. Their attorney, Reda Hammouche, stated that they are entrusting the justice system to uncover the truth.

Speculations emerged suggesting that Karen, a mother of four who was in the process of divorcing her husband residing in South Africa, was embroiled in a jealous conflict related to her romantic relationships. At the time of her demise, she was separating from her husband and involved with Jean-François Guerrier, a 75-year-old retired business executive living near her French property.

Local resident Marie-Laure Autefort, aged 70, reportedly developed strong feelings for Guerrier a year before he engaged in a romantic relationship with Karen, leading some to consider her as a possible suspect. However, her brother dismissed this notion as absurd. Both Guerrier and Autefort were arrested following the incident but were released without charges, vehemently denying any involvement.

Guerrier hosted a wine tasting event on April 19, 2025, and subsequently followed Karen to her home. Upon arrival, he discovered her lifeless in a pool of blood, with authorities pronouncing her deceased at the scene. Conflicting reports exist regarding Guerrier’s actions that night, initially suggesting concern when Karen did not contact him upon reaching her residence, only later revealing that he intended to spend the night there.

Guerrier directed investigators to Autefort during his brief detention, highlighting her residence near the victim’s house. Autefort provided a solid alibi, and DNA samples from her and Guerrier, along with other guests at the wine tasting, did not match any evidence. The possibility of a contract killing is under active investigation, with no murder weapon recovered, indicating a swift entry and exit from Trémolat by the perpetrator.

Alan Carter, Karen’s husband with whom she shares four children, acknowledged being implicated by locals, alleging that he orchestrated the murder to gain control of the family’s substantial estate. However, he emphasized that the accusations were more distressing for their children and the family as a whole than for himself. Prosecutor Jacques-Édouard Andrault, overseeing the probe into premeditated murder, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
