A grandfather with disabilities expressed disbelief after he was reportedly ejected from an Asda store following a dispute concerning a mobility scooter. Tony Daniels, aged 73 and residing in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, claimed the incident occurred at a supermarket in Widnes town center on June 18.
According to Tony, he was allegedly surrounded by security personnel and instructed to leave the premises when he declined to provide his information to use a mobility scooter. Notably, he stated that he is not required to provide details when shopping at his local Asda on Smithdown Road.
Asda stated that it is their protocol to request some information from individuals using mobility scooters in-store. The company reportedly sent a communication to Tony to clarify this policy, as per reports from the Liverpool Echo.
Tony, a retired builder who uses two walking sticks, recounted that he sought to utilize a mobility scooter trolley at the Asda on Widnes Road. However, he was informed by a security guard that he needed to disclose his personal details. When Tony refused and requested to speak with a manager, the situation escalated.
Narrating the incident, Tony mentioned feeling mistreated and singled out despite being disabled and not posing a threat. He contrasted the experience with his seamless interactions at the Asda store on Smithdown Road, where staff readily assist him with using a mobility scooter and shopping needs.
The ordeal deeply affected Tony, who expressed lingering distress and recounted feeling physically vulnerable during the incident. An Asda representative emphasized that the request for details from mobility scooter users is a safety measure applied uniformly across their stores, aimed at ensuring the well-being of all customers and staff. The company expressed willingness to engage directly with Mr. Daniels for further clarification or inquiries.
