A woman decided to leave the United Kingdom for a fresh start overseas due to her dissatisfaction with life in the country. Ebony Joseph, aged 30, made the move from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, to the northern part of Saint Lucia on April 30, 2025, after facing challenges with her mental health and growing discontent with her British lifestyle.
As a pastry chef, Ebony felt trapped in a cycle of working solely to meet financial obligations, with little hope of owning property. Inspired by a vacation to Saint Lucia a year earlier, where she was captivated by the island’s relaxed atmosphere, picturesque landscapes, and promising business opportunities, Ebony took a courageous step to begin anew abroad.
Over a year later, she reports a significant improvement in her well-being, heightened energy levels, and progress towards establishing her own tour company and interactive travel guide.
In comparison to her experiences in the UK, Ebony highlights the affordability of living in Saint Lucia, where dining out costs as little as £5 instead of £100 back in the UK. Acquiring St Lucian citizenship in September 2025 through her paternal lineage, Ebony expressed contentment with her decision to relocate, emphasizing the lower cost of living and enhanced quality of life on the tropical island.
Initially visiting Saint Lucia as a tourist, Ebony developed a friendship with a local named Sisi, who later assisted her in settling down permanently in the new environment. With only £2,000 in savings, Ebony made the transatlantic move, relying on the support of friends and locals while establishing herself.
Despite the financial challenges of relocation, Ebony stresses the fulfilling lifestyle she now enjoys on the island, attributing her improved well-being to the outdoor activities and strong connection with nature that Saint Lucia offers.
Embracing the cultural differences, Ebony appreciates the emphasis on community, well-being, and personal growth in Saint Lucia, contrasting it with the work-centric and materialistic culture she experienced in the UK.
Reflecting on her bold decision to relocate, Ebony considers it one of the most significant choices she has made, expressing no regrets about the life-changing move. She encourages individuals to take risks and pursue what is best for their own well-being, emphasizing the importance of taking control of one’s life to realize potential opportunities and personal growth.
