The family of a man who tragically lost his life in a shark attack is mourning the loss of their beloved relative, describing him as a unique and kind-hearted individual. Steven “Mattas” Mattaboni, aged 38, was the victim of a fatal shark encounter near Rottnest Island, a popular vacation spot in Western Australia. Following the incident, Steven’s wife Shirene fondly remembered him as a devoted father to their two young daughters, aged two and four months. She expressed deep sorrow over his passing, emphasizing his passion for fishing and the ocean, as well as his exceptional generosity and loyalty.
Steven, a multi-talented individual who also excelled in Australian Rules Football, was a cherished member of the Kingsley Football Club. The club honored him, highlighting his genuine nature and the positive impact he had on everyone he knew. Sergeant Michael Wear, who led the investigation at Rottnest Island, revealed that Steven’s friends were present during the tragic attack and tried to save him by performing CPR before bringing him ashore.
Reports from Surf Life Saving WA confirmed the presence of a 16ft great white shark in the area at the time of the incident. An official inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Steven’s death has been initiated. Rottnest Island, known for its popularity among tourists, had not experienced a fatal shark attack since the previous year. Australia has a history of shark incidents, with approximately 1,300 recorded attacks dating back to 1791, resulting in around 260 fatalities.
