Renowned designer Elizabeth Emanuel has recently crafted a duplicate of Princess Diana’s 40-foot veil, which had been missing for over 40 years. The iconic embroidered veil, originally designed by Elizabeth and her husband David for Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, has been recreated to bring back a piece of history.

The original veil had been absent from public displays of Diana’s famous wedding gown at Kensington Palace and Althorp House. Commissioned by Renae Plant, founder of the Princess Diana Museum, Elizabeth Emanuel embarked on this project to resurrect the veil on the 45th anniversary of the royal wedding.

Through Instagram, Elizabeth shared rare photos of the seamstresses and embroiderers diligently working on the bridal gown in her Mayfair studio in 1981. Reflecting on the memories, she expressed disbelief that 45 years had passed since the royal wedding.

In an interview with People magazine, Elizabeth revealed the significance of the veil in completing Diana’s wedding ensemble, referring to it as the “Veil of Light.” The designer emphasized that the veil adds a unique radiance and ethereal quality to the dress, making it an indispensable part of the overall design.

To ensure accuracy in recreating the veil, Elizabeth collaborated with London-based embroidery house Hand & Lock, the original producers of the veil in 1981, and utilized the initial measurements for authenticity.

As the recreated veil prepares to go on tour in Autumn, allowing the public a rare glimpse, the legacy of Diana’s wedding attire continues to captivate audiences worldwide. The meticulous efforts taken by David and Elizabeth Emanuel to safeguard the secrecy of Diana’s wedding dress design have now culminated in a tribute that preserves the magic of that historic day.
