Weather models are indicating that the UK could experience the hottest day of the year in the upcoming week. The current temperature record for 2026 stands at 37.7C, recorded on June 26 in Lingwood, Norfolk. However, there is a possibility that temperatures could exceed 37C again next week.

According to the GFS weather model, maximum temperatures could reach 34C in southern England on Wednesday next week, spanning from Gloucestershire to Surrey. South Wales might see temperatures hitting 31C, while the Midlands could reach as high as 33C.

The model predicts that on Thursday next week, temperatures could reach highs of 36C across western and southern England, with temperatures rising to 33C in Yorkshire and 28C in southern Scotland. By Friday next week, western and south-east England could experience highs of at least 37C, with 36C possible across central and southern England.

Looking ahead to Saturday next week, East Anglia could see highs of 36C, Yorkshire 33C, the south-east 36C, and the Midlands 33-34C. These conditions would mark an official heatwave over the four days.

Temperature anomaly maps for next week show the UK colored in deep red, indicating temperatures significantly above the seasonal average. The GFS model suggests that temperatures exceeding 37C could be reached in eight English counties next week.

The Met Office has mentioned the potential for ‘very warm or hot’ conditions later in the month, with the possibility of ‘thundery interludes.’ Their forecast for August 9 to 18 indicates that high pressure may dominate towards the north or northwest of the UK, with lower pressure in the south or east. Temperatures are expected to remain above average, particularly in the south, possibly becoming very warm or hot.
