More than 130 individuals have reportedly lost their lives, with over 500 suspected cases emerging in the recent Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, as disclosed by the nation’s health ministry in a startling update.
US President Donald Trump expressed his apprehension following confirmation that an American was one of the individuals who tested positive for the virus, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Samuel Roger Kamba, the Congolese minister of public health, stated, “In the affected regions, there have been 513 suspected cases and 131 fatalities recorded. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the actual link to the disease for these suspected deaths.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the Ebola outbreak as a global public health emergency. Trump, when questioned about his concerns regarding the situation, responded, “I am concerned about numerous issues, including this one.” He acknowledged the outbreak’s current containment in Africa but noted its alarming progression.
Health authorities have identified the outbreak, first reported on Friday, as stemming from the Bundibugyo virus, a rare strain of Ebola for which no approved treatments or vaccines exist. While previous Ebola outbreaks have occurred in Congo and Uganda, this marks only the third instance of the Bundibugyo virus detection.
Confirmed cases have spread to various locations including Bunia, Goma, Mongbwalu, Butembo, and Nyakunde in North Kivu. The WHO’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed deep concerns about the epidemic’s rapid escalation and scale, prompting the UN health agency to convene an emergency committee for guidance and recommendations.
