A senior citizen who was declared deceased was urgently returned to the hospital when employees at a funeral home discovered signs of life in him.
Juraci Rosa Alves was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, May 16, where a physician pronounced him dead due to respiratory failure. Following this declaration, the 88-year-old was transferred to a funeral home for standard post-mortem procedures.
During the preparation of his body for the wake, staff at the funeral home noticed movements indicating life. Jacqueline Brogiato, the technical nursing supervisor at the funeral home, stated that their team detected vital signs while carrying out routine procedures, prompting immediate efforts to save him.
Alves was swiftly transported to a hospital in Presidente Prudente, Brazil, where he is currently under medical care. Family members expressed shock at the turn of events, with one relative mentioning the delay in his arrival at the funeral home and the subsequent realization that he was alive.
Authorities have classified the incident as a “failure to provide assistance” and are investigating the matter. Alves remains in the intensive care unit, intubated and in a serious but stable condition.
Representing the family, Carlos Alberto Carneiro shared that the hospital treating Alves indicated a potential deterioration in his health due to his age and the time lapse without proper care.
The initial hospital in Presidente Bernardes has announced an internal inquiry into the incident and is ready to offer any necessary clarifications.
