The Conservative Party recently issued an apology for a controversial social media video that sparked outrage for its apparent inclusion of footage related to the tragic event known as Bloody Sunday. The video, shared by Kemi Badenoch, criticized the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill but was swiftly deleted following a backlash.

Bloody Sunday, a tragic incident also referred to as the Bogside Massacre, occurred in Derry, Northern Ireland on January 30, 1972. During this event, British troops fired upon unarmed protestors, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals and injuries to 26 others.

One of the clips in the video was identified as being from Bloody Sunday by Foyle MP Colum Eastwood, who condemned its use as “disgusting” and “disgraceful.” Eastwood criticized the video for prioritizing the interests of British soldiers over the long-standing quest for truth, justice, and accountability by the victims and survivors of the violence.

In response to the backlash, a Conservative spokesperson issued an apology, stating that the video had been removed and expressing regret for the inappropriate use of the material. The video, shared by Badenoch, criticized the Labour Party’s stance on the Troubles Bill, claiming it would unfairly subject veterans to renewed legal battles.

The Troubles Bill aimed to replace the controversial Legacy Act, which had provided immunity to certain individuals involved in the Troubles. The previous Conservative government’s Legacy Act had faced legal challenges and was deemed unlawful.

Notably, in 2010, former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron apologized to the families of the civil rights marchers killed on Bloody Sunday following the findings of the Saville Inquiry, which confirmed the innocence of those who lost their lives.
