Geoff Burrow, the father of rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has sadly passed away, it was announced. Geoff played a crucial role in the remarkable awareness and fundraising efforts that began following Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos released a statement expressing deep sadness over the passing of Geoff Burrow on March 30th. Geoff, a Leeds native, dedicated himself to advocating for the MND community after Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his efforts following Rob’s passing in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first game at Headingley, sparking Rob’s lifelong love for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed the voiceless.
The club extended its heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s wife Irene and the Burrow family during this difficult time, urging privacy for the family to mourn in peace.
Rob Burrow, a Leeds legend, battled MND from late 2019 until his passing in June 2024. Supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, Rob tirelessly campaigned, leading to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds.
Geoff, grateful for the community’s fundraising efforts, emphasized the impact on MND patients, families, and the dedicated staff at the center.
Geoff played a vital role in caring for Rob and their children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing, Geoff shared the poignant moments they shared in the hospital.
