A recent report has raised concerns about a £6.3 billion armoured vehicle funded by taxpayers, suggesting that it may never be suitable for combat use. The Ajax vehicle has faced repeated criticisms regarding crew safety due to issues related to noise and vibration, with the Public Accounts Committee noting unrealistic expectations about its operation in war zones.

The Government’s delay in releasing the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) has also been criticized for compromising national security. Originally planned for deployment in 2017, the Ajax system has faced numerous setbacks, primarily due to crew safety concerns. Despite receiving clearance for operations last November, an exercise had to be halted shortly after due to soldiers experiencing symptoms linked to noise and vibration exposure.

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, expressed astonishment over the maintenance requirements of the Ajax vehicle, emphasizing the need for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to address its suitability for combat and associated costs. The delay in publishing the DIP has further drawn criticism, as it was initially expected to guide the country’s defense strategy for the next decade.

The absence of the DIP has been described as detrimental to national credibility, safety, armed forces, and defense industry certainty by Sir Geoffrey. The imminent release of the DIP before the Nato summit in July has been promised by the Prime Minister to address the current defense challenges facing the UK.

Defense Committee Chair Tan Dhesi called for urgent action to resolve the defense paralysis caused by the DIP’s delay. A Ministry of Defence spokesman highlighted the government’s commitment to significantly increase defense spending and revamp the existing defense programs. The spokesman assured that efforts are underway to finalize the DIP, as emphasized by the Defense Secretary in recent parliamentary discussions.
