A significant rescue operation was initiated today following a boat catching fire and sinking in a popular coastal area. The Coast Guard received a distress call about a fire onboard an 11-meter pleasure craft located one-and-a-half miles off the coast of Dun Laoghaire before 4 pm on Saturday, April 18.
Shortly after the call, a lifeboat from Dun Laoghaire RNLI arrived at the scene and successfully evacuated the four adults on board, bringing them safely ashore, as reported by DublinLive. Gardai, the Dun Laoghaire All Weather Lifeboat, Dublin Port tug, and Dublin Fire Brigade also responded to the incident. The fire was extinguished around 5 pm, and the vessel eventually sank.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transport informed Dublin Live that at approximately 3:45 pm, the Coast Guard was alerted by the 11-meter pleasure craft with four adults on board reporting a fire. The vessel was situated about 1.5 miles northeast of Dun Laoghaire.
The spokesperson mentioned that Dun Laoghaire RNLI arrived at the scene at 3:56 pm, successfully evacuated the adults, and transported them for assessment at the RNLI station. Other units, including Dun Laoghaire All Weather Lifeboat and Dublin Port tug, remained on-site for monitoring. The fire was reported extinguished by 5:15 pm, and the vessel eventually sank.
