Chris Packham has issued a pressing appeal to supermarkets to put an end to the inhumane practice of culling male chicks in the egg industry, questioning the delay in taking action. The well-known Springwatch presenter, aged 65, criticized the ongoing killing of around 45 million male chicks each year in the UK, as they are deemed unproductive for egg laying or meat production. Alongside celebrities like Dame Joanna Lumley and Brian Cox from Succession, Packham signed a letter urging major retailers to address this issue, which despite growing public awareness, continues to persist.
Describing the current method as both wasteful and cruel, Packham emphasized that the UK should no longer tolerate male chick culling when alternative solutions are available and already adopted in other countries. The Vegetarian Society is leading a campaign against this practice with support from figures like Sadie Frost, Cathy Caddidy, and Dave Spikey. The society’s Ban Hatch and Dispatch petition has gained over 40,000 signatures, including those of more than 100 politicians.
In contrast to culling, the RSPCA advocates for alternative approaches such as in-ovo sexing, raising male chicks for meat, and utilizing dual-purpose breeds to prevent the mass killing of male chicks. Jenny Canham, the lead for Public Affairs, highlighted the crucial role of retailers in ending this practice, urging for a collective effort between industry and government to eliminate male chick culling in the UK as it falls behind other nations.
A joint letter, endorsed by 11 celebrities, has been dispatched to top executives at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Morrisons, and Lidl, pushing for action to end male chick culling. While it was previously argued that culling was necessary to feed captive reptiles, recent research has introduced viable alternatives.
