A tragic incident unfolded in Louisiana where one of the victims of a mass shooting, a child, was discovered deceased on a rooftop while attempting to flee, as confirmed by the police.
The devastating attacks, believed to have been carried out by Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old army veteran, occurred across three locations in Shreveport early in the morning. Authorities disclosed that the victims, aged between 1 and 12 years old, were announced at a press conference, eliciting shock from the attendees.
Shreveport Police Department Corporal Chris Bordelon revealed that the extensive crime scene spanned three sites in the Cedar Grove area. Following the assaults, Elkins engaged in a carjacking before being pursued and fatally shot by law enforcement officers.
Corporal Bordelon further disclosed that seven children were tragically killed inside one of the residences, while another child was found deceased on the roof, presumably attempting to escape. It remains unclear whether the child on the roof was related to the perpetrator.
State Representative Tammy Phelps expressed disbelief at the harrowing situation, mentioning that some children had tried to escape through the rear exit. Meanwhile, two women sustained critical injuries, as reported by officials.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Shreveport native, expressed sorrow in separate statements and commended the swift action of law enforcement in responding to the tragedy.
The motive behind the violence remains unknown, with investigators indicating that it appeared to be a domestic-related incident. This incident marked the deadliest mass shooting in the US since January 2024, when a similar tragedy occurred in a Chicago suburb, according to data compiled by The Associated Press and USA Today in collaboration with Northeastern University.
