The parents of a young child who was reportedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure have shared details about his extensive injuries and revealed that he recently underwent his seventh surgical procedure. The three-year-old remains in stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, a month after the harrowing incident in which he was attacked by one or more of the large reptiles.

In an update posted on GoFundMe, the parents disclosed, “Our son underwent his seventh surgery today. During the procedure, surgeons conducted a nerve graft on his left arm, utilizing a nerve from his leg to replace the missing part in his arm. This nerve is expected to integrate over time, potentially aiding in the recovery of function in his left hand. The success of the nerve graft will be assessed through tests in the coming months.”

They added, “Tomorrow marks four weeks of hospitalization. Upon our arrival on June 18, our son underwent a 12-hour surgery where the medical team addressed tendon, nerve, blood vessel damage, as well as fractures and severe tissue injuries in his arms, neck, head, and face. Those 12 hours were incredibly challenging for us, as we had to make difficult decisions regarding resuscitation and amputation.”

The child, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rescued from the crocodile enclosure by the zoo’s owners, including Andy and Tracey Johnson and their son Edward, who bravely intervened to save him. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released on bail until September 18 due to being deemed unfit for questioning. The individual, reportedly with severe learning disabilities, was under supervision when he allegedly threw the child over a 4-foot barrier into the 15-foot deep enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

An online fundraiser set up to aid the boy’s physical and emotional recovery has garnered over £68,000 in support. The parents expressed gratitude, stating, “We were uncertain about our son’s survival, which was agonizing. After four weeks, our resilient little boy is engaging with caregivers, playing with his feet, and smiling once more. We are astounded by his progress.”

They further shared, “While our journey is ongoing, we are hopeful that today’s surgery may conclude the current phase of treatment, allowing us to return home soon. Post-discharge, we anticipate new challenges in his physical and psychological rehabilitation, prompting both of us to take temporary leave from work to support him.”

The parents concluded, “Recovery and rehabilitation may present uncertainties, but our son’s need for our presence is paramount. We deeply appreciate the continued well wishes and support during this trying period. Your unwavering assistance has been instrumental in accompanying us through every step of this journey.”

Addenbrooke’s Hospital is reportedly under investigation following concerns that the child’s medical records were accessed by 40 staff members. Cambridge University Hospitals has self-referred to the Information Commissioner’s Office to investigate the legitimacy of the record access.
