Two individuals have lost their lives, and 19 others have been admitted to hospitals following a chemical spill at a facility in West Virginia. The incident occurred at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, where a chemical reaction involving nitric acid and another substance resulted in the release of hydrogen sulfide, a highly toxic gas. Emergency responders reported that the reaction caused a sudden and intense release of chemicals.

Among those affected were seven ambulance personnel who had responded to the scene. Some individuals were transported to medical facilities in private vehicles, including a garbage truck. A one-mile radius around the plant was placed under a shelter-in-place directive as a precautionary measure.

The Chief of Kanawha County Commission Emergency Management, C.W. Sigman, emphasized the critical nature of chemical reactions, stating that starting or ending such reactions poses significant risks.
