Charleroi Airport, the second largest airport in Belgium located in Brussels, is preparing to undergo a significant closure for an 11-week period in 2028. This closure is necessary for the renovation of the airport’s runway and overall revamping of the facilities. Approximately two million travelers are expected to be affected by the closure, with all flights being impacted from August 15 to October 31, 2028, covering the busy school summer holidays and the October half-term break.
The renovation works at the airport are estimated to cost around €50 million (£42.8 million) and will involve extensive upgrades, including the complete resurfacing of the 3,200-meter runway. Various airlines, such as Ryanair and Wizz Air, currently operating flights to and from Charleroi Airport, will need to temporarily redirect their flights to alternative airports during this period.
Although specific details of the rerouting plan are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that flights may either face cancellations or diversions. The airport management, as reported in various sources, has confirmed that the comprehensive refurbishment of the airport’s runway is part of a broader infrastructure modernization project planned by SOWAER, the overseeing company, for the latter half of 2028.
