Celine Dion is gearing up for her five-week residency in Paris starting next month while shedding light on her battle with illness. In an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Canadian icon revealed that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder caused severe pain, making it difficult for her to walk on some days, often requiring a high dosage of Valium for relief.

Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time, affecting only a small percentage of the population. Its symptoms, including muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, have no known specific cause or approved treatment. Despite the challenges, Dion continued to perform, concealing the extent of her pain from her fans by attributing cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the tough decision to cancel all remaining shows to focus on her health. She has not performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics but is set to make a comeback in September. Dion’s recovery journey has been intense, involving a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been diligently practicing Pilates and ballet to prepare for her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly in motion and fearful of freezing up, Dion views her recovery and return to the stage as a miracle that she deeply appreciates. Despite feeling strong and excited, she admits to some nerves but is eager to make her comeback. Her Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled between September 12 and May 29 next year, marks a significant milestone in her journey back to the spotlight.
