British Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the ongoing efforts needed to solidify the Iran-US ceasefire while avoiding direct comments on the state of his relationship with Donald Trump. Starmer’s visit to Saudi Arabia followed President Trump’s shift from aggressive threats towards Iran to agreeing to a two-week ceasefire, reducing tensions in the region.
Despite the ceasefire agreement, Israel’s continued airstrikes on Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group, have raised concerns about the stability of the truce. Israel asserts that its military actions are not covered by the ceasefire terms, adding complexity to the situation.
During a visit to a Saudi air base, Starmer expressed relief at the ceasefire but emphasized the necessity for sustained efforts to uphold the peace deal and ensure the security of the vital Strait of Hormuz. He highlighted the importance of collaborating with regional partners to achieve these goals.
Starmer reiterated Britain’s commitment to refrain from direct involvement in the conflict, a stance that has strained his relationship with Trump. The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of upholding lawful principles and values in making decisions related to national interest and collective self-defense.
World leaders, including Starmer, called for an end to Israel’s assault on Lebanon and supported diplomatic efforts for a negotiated settlement to protect Iran’s civilians and regional security. The leaders emphasized the importance of implementing the ceasefire and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to prevent a global energy crisis.
President Trump announced a two-week ceasefire, acknowledging Iran’s proposal for negotiation. He stated that US forces would monitor the situation to ensure compliance. Pakistan’s Prime Minister also extended invitations for talks between Iranian and US officials in Islamabad.
Trump expressed optimism for world peace and the potential for a prosperous era in the Middle East following the ceasefire agreement.
