Canada’s women’s volleyball team secured a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after defeating the Dominican Republic in the championship match of the NORCECA Continental Qualifier. Coached by Giovanni Guidetti, Canada emerged victorious in four games against the Dominican Republic, with a final score of 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14. This win marked Canada’s fourth Olympic appearance and their first since 1996.
Alexa Gray, a team member since 2017, expressed her joy at achieving this lifelong dream, especially after narrowly missing out on qualification for the 2024 Games. Gray, along with Kiera Van Ryk, played a crucial role in Canada’s victory, each contributing 22 points. Despite a valiant effort from the Dominican Republic, Canada dominated in attack points, blocks, and aces.
Brie Fransen, a veteran setter, commended the team’s hard work and resilience, describing the feeling of qualifying for the Olympics as surreal. Prior to securing their Olympic berth, Canada also clinched their first-ever NORCECA Continental Championship by defeating the United States in the final.
Coach Guidetti praised the dedication of the athletes and staff, emphasizing the team’s successful achievement of their season goals, including reaching the VNL finals and qualifying for the Olympics. The team’s remarkable performance in the qualifying tournament and championship match showcased their determination and talent.
This victory not only marks a significant milestone for the Canadian women’s volleyball team but also sets the stage for their participation in the prestigious 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
