Canada’s lead trade negotiator with the U.S. is challenging several assertions made by American officials regarding the breakdown of trade discussions last week. The Canadian side rejects claims that they introduced last-minute demands related to automobiles and that U.S. negotiators were not interested in French language discoverability rules.

In an exclusive interview with CBC’s The House, Janice Charette emphasized that Canada consistently emphasized the importance of the entire automotive sector during the negotiations. This contradicts statements made by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who suggested that Canadian requests for tariff relief on medium- and heavy-duty trucks were only raised at the eleventh hour to sabotage the deal.

Charette clarified that the issue of medium- and heavy-duty trucks was brought up on multiple occasions throughout the week, not just at the last moment as claimed by Lutnick. She refrained from directly contradicting Lutnick but stated that the Canadian delegation had been advocating for tariff relief for various types of autos, including specific models produced in Ontario.

Regarding the ongoing dispute over the collapsed trade deal, Prime Minister Mark Carney attributed the breakdown to late U.S. demands, which led to the recall of negotiators to Ottawa. Conversely, Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer point fingers at Canada for the deal’s failure.

Charette emphasized that Canada sought a trade agreement that would benefit both countries economically without compromising Canadian sovereignty. She explained that trust between the two nations is crucial in future negotiations, highlighting the need for a fair and mutually beneficial trade deal.

As discussions remain stalled, both countries are preparing for a prolonged conflict. Canada announced retaliatory measures against U.S. tariffs, matching President Trump’s actions with tariffs on American goods. Additionally, the Canadian government unveiled financial support for affected workers and businesses in response to the tariffs.

Despite the current impasse, Charette expressed pride in the efforts of the Canadian team during the negotiations, underscoring their exhaustive approach to reaching a favorable resolution.
