A tragic incident occurred in northern Spain where a British woman lost her life while hiking with her partner. The 42-year-old woman fell over 500 meters from Balaitus Peak, a renowned mountain in the Pyrenees near the Spanish-French border, in front of her 53-year-old partner. The fatal accident took place on the Great Diagonal, a popular route to the peak’s 3,144-meter summit.
Authorities have confirmed that the deceased woman was British and had her roots in the UK but resided in Finland, like her male companion whose nationality remains undisclosed. The Civil Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident, treating the woman’s death as a tragic fall.
Specialist mountain search and rescue teams, along with a helicopter, were deployed to retrieve the woman’s body from the mountain. Her remains were then transported to a nearby heliport and later to Zaragoza’s Forensic Medicine Institute for a post-mortem examination.
Reports suggest that the weather conditions were favorable on the day of the accident, although the woman is believed to have slipped in a snow-covered area while descending the mountain. Balaitus Peak, situated on the Spain-France border, is a granite mass with several ridges, marking the beginning of the High Pyrenees range.
This unfortunate incident follows a similar tragedy from the previous month when a 61-year-old British hiker lost his life due to bad weather conditions in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain. The man had gone missing and was found deceased after a search operation involving both ground and aerial efforts.
