Search teams have located the body of American climber Mallory Geis, the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to conquer an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Residing in San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, announced on social media earlier this year her decision to close her Pilates studio and embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence deeply cherished by her loved ones.

The search operation commenced on July 31 following the tragic incident that befell the team under the leadership of noted climber Nirmal Purja. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali origin, achieved the remarkable feat of climbing the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a remarkable accomplishment showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”

Tragedies like this are not uncommon during mountain expeditions in northern Pakistan due to various hazards like avalanches, falling ice and rocks, extreme altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
