An amateur historian from Britain has recently delivered long-lost letters from a German Prisoner of War to his family, 80 years after they were originally written. Josef Stoffel wrote the letters to his mother, Anna, while he was held in a PoW camp in England during World War 2, but they were never sent due to post-war chaos.

Robbie Wilson came across the letters online, purchased them, and managed to locate Josef’s niece, Resi Bach, who is now 89 years old. Resi was deeply moved to receive her late uncle’s letters but lamented that her grandmother never had the chance to read them.

Expressing a sense of duty, Robbie explained, “When I learned more about Josef and his family, I felt a strong responsibility to reunite the letters with them.” Resi expressed her joy at the reappearance of her uncle’s letters, which she had no prior knowledge of until they were recently found and brought to her attention.

After connecting with the mayor of Kratzenburg, where Anna resided, Robbie was able to locate Resi. She was surprised and touched when the mayor, Björn Seis, turned up with the 80-year-old letters. Resi shared fond memories of her uncle Josef, describing him as a hardworking and opinionated man who integrated back into village life after his release from captivity.

The letters, dated between September 1946 and January 1947, originated from Beeson House Camp near St Neots, which was one of many sites across Britain housing German prisoners post-World War 2. Stoffel’s letters depicted his experiences of hard labor, isolation, and a deep yearning for home, sentiments that his mother never had the chance to read.

The aftermath of the war left many families across Europe grappling with silence and uncertainty as they searched for missing loved ones. The letters shed light on the struggles faced by German prisoners detained in Britain, who were eventually repatriated to a homeland devastated by the war they had served.
