Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced backlash over the weekend for his suggestive comments about pop icon Kylie Minogue during a podcast appearance with comedian Nikki Osborne. The controversial remarks, made on Nova’s Bush Deep podcast known for its unconventional interviews, involved a game of “sh*g, marry, or date” featuring iconic Aussie figures like Minogue and Nicole Kidman.

Albanese initially hesitated when asked about Kylie but eventually expressed admiration for her, leading to criticism from political opponents. Independent MP Zali Steggall labeled the PM’s participation in such a game as inappropriate, while Liberal shadow minister Sarah Henderson deemed his comments disrespectful and embarrassing.

Following the uproar, Albanese issued a brief apology, acknowledging the misstep in his remarks. Shadow Communications Minister Henderson condemned the PM’s behavior, emphasizing the need for better conduct from Australia’s leaders. In a separate incident, previous Prime Minister Scott Morrison also faced backlash for controversial comments about female protestors demanding action on workplace harassment.

Despite the criticism, supporters of Albanese highlighted his track record on gender equality. Acting in his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles defended the PM’s commitment to women’s issues, highlighting achievements in gender representation within the government.

Albanese, currently in Fiji for diplomatic engagements, continues to face scrutiny over his podcast comments, with both criticism and support coming from various political figures.
