“Record Owl Migration in Northern British Columbia”

A significant number of migrating owls have kept researchers at the Mugaha Marsh Banding Station busy, as the birds move through northern British Columbia in unusually high numbers. Jeannine Randall, a bird biologist at the Mackenzie Nature Observatory, located about 200 kilometers north of Prince George, described this year as exceptional due to the record-breaking owl captures. The station faced a challenge of running out of the specialized tracking bands needed to monitor the birds, especially for the saw-whet owls, the primary species targeted for banding.

Despite reaching out to other organizations for assistance, it was evident that the surge in owls was a widespread phenomenon affecting multiple stations across the region. Randall attributed the spike in owl numbers to an abundance of small rodents, the main prey for these birds. While the surge in owl populations at Mackenzie is positive, Rémi Torrenta, a biologist with Birds Canada, highlighted a concerning trend of declining owl populations in the province over the past 25 years, including the northern saw-whet owls.

Torrenta explained that the current owl influx is likely part of a documented four-year cycle where an abundance of owls leads to a subsequent crash in the rodent population, forcing owls to migrate farther south in search of food. To monitor these trends, Birds Canada oversees the Nocturnal Owl Survey, a citizen science initiative that relies on volunteers nationwide to track owl numbers each spring.

Randall emphasized the importance of the Mackenzie Nature Observatory banding project in contributing essential data for monitoring owl populations and migration routes. Recapturing an owl originally banded in Victoria in 2024 provided valuable insights into the species’ travel patterns. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective species management and conservation efforts.
